This just in...View the Adath Israel Student Choir, performing at the City-Wide Zimria, held on March 7 at Har Zion. Teachers and students together are creating an environment for learning that i s dramatically changing the nature of afterschool religious school. The excitement stems from the introduction of an innovative curriculum that completely alters the way our children are being taught throughout their years at Adath Israel. When students are engaged and stimulated, when learning evolves developmentally and is aligned with children's emotional and intellectual growth, learning becomes the positive, challenging experience you can observe today in the classrooms of Adath Israel. Adath Israel was one of the first schools in the U.S. to participate in the NESS initiative (Nurturing Excellence in Synagogue Schools) created by the Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education (ACAJE). NESS is a four-year program geared towards strengthening synagogue schools through professional development for teachers, leadership development for education directors and training in organizational development strategies for synagogue and school lay leaders. As an outgrowth of our work with NESS, the Adath Israel Curriculum Committee spent four years deveoping a curriculum that incorporates student discussion and reasoning and is based on integrated themes and lessons that build on the work of the year before. The Adath Israel Curriculum is being used by ACAJE as a model for its NESS training across the Philadelphia metropolitan area and around the country. Our curriculum has been recognized for excellence with a Gold Solomon Schechter Award from the United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism (USCJ). The brochure is available in the school office or Click here to download the Curriculum brochure. Adath Israel Religious School was named as an ACAJE Ner Tamid School for having developed an ongoing professional development plan to the faculty. In recognition of having established high standards of education in the religious school, USCJ named Adath Israel Religious School as a Framework for Excellence School, which recognizes the collaboration between the educational staff, Rabbi, congregation and parents. Through this collaborative effort, the entire synagogue has a vested interest in the Jewish education of their youth.
